Hello, wonderers! Today I want to share the opening poem from my new poetry collection. This poem is called “Peppermint Mocha,” and it is just a sample of what my book includes. If you like this and want to read more, my book is available to purchase now. Without further ado, let’s jump on in!
Peppermint Mocha
I’ve never liked the smell of coffee
Bitter tendrils coiled in my stomach
No matter how far away I place the cup.
I get that from my mother.
I found comfort in hot chocolate,
Dark and creamy liquid candy,
The perfect cup for ten year olds.
My sister scooped powdered spoonfuls
From the tin into our cups
And from our cups into our stomaches,
Enough warmth to survive the snow.
We mixed it with
Peppermint Mocha creamer,
Satisfied with the sophistication
Of a flavor picked by us.
Candy canes were stronger,
But Dad used creamer in his cup.
How did he stand the smell?
We waited anxiously for December.
For Christmas.
For creamer.
Peppermint Mocha,
The season’s first gift.
I set my cup with my father’s
Even though I hate the smell.
