Hi, everyone! I’m back today to share my playlist for January 2023. This month I’m playing lots of cozy indie music and folk songs. You can find a preview of the playlist up above; the full thing is available on my Spotify (link at bottom of post).
A Quick Disclaimer About Indie Music
Indie music can be defined a bit differently depending on who you talk to. For some people, it’s about music style. Others say it’s about the artist’s following size. For yet others, it’s about being a truly independent artist (someone not signed with a record label). I included a few artists on this playlist that not everyone considers to be folk or indie (Taylor Swift, for example). It’s totally fine if you think a different term would suit these artists better, but “indie” is the one I chose to go with since that’s the tone of the playlist as a whole. Now let’s jump on into the actual post.
Why I Chose Cozy Indie Music
So, my theme for 2023 as a whole is “Balance.” I’m prioritizing the balance between rest and work in January. This month I wanted a playlist that was versatile enough to be played both while I’m resting and being productive. That means it needed to be upbeat enough to keep me engaged on boring tasks while still low-key enough to not disrupt my calm. Indie and folk music checked all those boxes for me while having a nice winter cottage vibe. I especially focused on acoustic and stripped-down indie music this month.
Let’s Talk Artists
Next, I want to spend a bit of time chatting about the specific artists I chose to feature. I included a few old favorites of mine, such as Hozier and The National Parks. You can find them on quite a few of my other playlists. They’re both staples of the indie-folk genre and for good reason. Listening to their music makes me feel like a forest witch in the best way possible. I also added a few new to me artists, including Lizzie LeBleu and Joel Ansett. Both of these artists feature acoustic guitar rifts and soft vocals I really enjoy. It’s always nice to discover new artists who fit in well with your old favorites.
What are you listening to this month? I’d love to know in the comments below or on my Instagram!
